Orchestrating the Ceiling Plane
An expansive ceiling curve presents a distinct set of challenges and opportunities within custom residential construction. The intent here was to create a singular, uninterrupted overhead surface that complemented the architectural lines below, specifically an integrated window bay. Achieving this continuity across a broad span demands meticulous structural support and a clear understanding of how finishing materials will conform to the underlying framework.
Precision in Framing and Finishes
The substructure for a compound curve like this must be engineered to hold its form rigorously, providing a stable base for subsequent finish layers. For the finish carpentry, the chosen narrow wood boards were selected for their ability to follow the arc without fracturing or creating visible stress points. This required precise cutting and fitting of each board, ensuring tight reveals and a smooth transition across the entire radius. The grain direction and board width are critical considerations for both structural stability and visual flow along a curve.
Defining Depth and Form
