The central stair in the Bedford Residence serves as more than vertical circulation; it is a principal architectural element, conceived to connect distinct living areas while maintaining an open, fluid interior language. The design intent prioritizes visual transparency and material continuity, aligning with the project's warm contemporary character and its west coast influence.

Materiality and Detail

Fabricated with open white oak treads, the stair introduces a consistent natural material into the core of the home. The selection of white oak, a recurring element throughout the residence, contributes to a cohesive interior palette characterized by warm minimalism. A glass balustrade, capped with an oak rail, maintains sightlines and allows light to penetrate the space, preventing the stair from feeling visually heavy or enclosed.

Precision in Execution

The integration of recessed step lighting within the stringer wall demonstrates a commitment to precise detailing and controlled illumination. This approach ensures that the light source is discreet, allowing the run of treads to present as a single, clean plane. Such meticulous execution, from material selection to the carpentry and finish detailing performed by iBuild’s in-house team, is fundamental to achieving the desired architectural expression.

Spatial Progression

The stair is strategically positioned to create a smooth transition between the dining area and the living room, acting as a visual anchor without obstructing the expansive feel of the main communal spaces.
