The Bedford Residence showcases a comprehensive scope that encompasses interior reconfiguration, a complete building envelope upgrade, and detailed interior finish work. This project involved a thorough reimagining of the home's functional and aesthetic qualities, moving from initial concept to a fully realized structure. The architectural character draws on warm contemporary and West Coast influences, expressed through a disciplined material palette.

The Hearth as Organizing Principle

Central to the great room's design is the hearth, which serves as a focal point for the space. The design intent was to integrate the fireplace surround seamlessly within the broader wall planes. This involved meticulous planning of panel layout, reveal lines, and material returns. The objective was for the surround to read as an intrinsic element of the wall, rather than an applied feature, contributing to the overall sense of unified form. The execution of these details ensures visual continuity and a refined finish.

Materiality and Detail

The interior language of warm minimalism is articulated through a specific selection of natural materials. White oak and walnut provide warmth and texture, while marble and porcelain slab introduce varied surface qualities. Blackened metal accents offer contrast and definition. For the building envelope, cedar and standing-seam roofing were chosen, addressing both aesthetic and performance criteria. These materials, specified early in the design process, guided the construction and finishing approach.

Craft and Spatial Definition

Key areas like the kitchen, scullery, and pantry were conceived as a cohesive program, demonstrating a continuous application of design principles. Similarly, the office, library, and dressing suite feature bespoke millwork, tailored to precise spatial requirements. Further bespoke elements include wet bar, lounge, and understair casework. The exterior hardscape and lighting were also part of iBuild's scope, extending the project's design language beyond the immediate interior envelope and ensuring a unified presentation.
