Disciplined Volumes in Bedford

A whole-home remodel in Bedford, New Hampshire pairs controlled exterior massing with an extensive architectural millwork program.
Stacked charcoal volumes with mahogany accent panels above terraced stone retaining walls.
Regulating the Exterior Mass
In Bedford, New Hampshire, executing a contemporary vernacular influenced by West Coast architecture requires a strict editing process, particularly when readdressing a substantial existing structure. The building envelope was rebuilt around stacked charcoal volumes, counterbalanced by horizontal mahogany accent panels positioned specifically where the eye needs relief. Standing-seam roofing sharpens the overall profile, establishing crisp edges against the New England tree canopy.
By limiting the exterior palette to dark siding, warm wood accents, and native stone, the massing reads as clear geometric planes rather than an assembly of competing details. The transitions between the dark siding and mahogany panels were detailed with intentional reveals, keeping the two materials distinctly held apart across the facade.
Realigning the Interior Plan
The project scope required an extensive interior reconfiguration to establish visual clarity and uninhibited circulation. Working through structural adjustments, the floor plan was reorganized around an open central living sequence supported by a dedicated kitchen, scullery, and walk-in pantry program.
This revised flow separates working service zones from the primary living spaces without breaking sightlines. White oak and cedar establish the primary architectural datum throughout the main floor, creating warmth alongside blackened metal structural elements, smooth porcelain surfaces, and natural marble slabs.
Integrated Casework and Tolerances
Because iBuild operates its own millwork shop and in-house carpentry crew, the extensive casework program was fabricated in direct coordination with the on-site framing. Walnut and white oak define the private office, library, and dressing suite, where built-in components provide spatial division in place of standard partition walls.
In the lounge, the wet bar and custom understair casework demanded precise tolerances against surrounding steel and stone. Reveals were held uniform where the wood cabinetry interfaces with blackened metal and marble countertops, eliminating the need for applied moldings or visible trim.
Grounding the Site Approach
The architecture meets the grade through terraced stone retaining walls that step down the property. The hardscape approach and architectural exterior lighting were indexed directly to the structural grid of the house, anchoring the vertical weight of the charcoal volumes into the landscape.
