Kitchen Architecture at the Bedford Residence

In Bedford, New Hampshire, an expansive rift white oak kitchen anchors a contemporary whole-home remodel built with shop-coordinated precision.
Kitchen with the long island and rift white oak cabinetry.
Reconfiguring the Living Core
The whole-home remodel in Bedford reorganized the existing interior around a clear architectural axis influenced by West Coast contemporary planning. By clearing compartmentalized partitions, the kitchen was positioned as the primary anchor of the main floor. Central to this volume is a single, continuous island that organizes movement between prep stations, the surrounding casework, and the adjacent living zones. The scale of the room demanded an intentional material strategy to introduce warmth without visual clutter.
Millwork Coordination and Tolerances
Achieving clean reveals across large spans of rift white oak required disciplined coordination between the field crew and iBuild's dedicated millwork shop. Every appliance specification, panel gap, and piece of concealed hardware was mapped during pre-construction rather than resolved during installation.
Rift-sawn white oak requires precise grain matching across drawer banks and tall appliance columns to prevent discordant visual breaks. By fabricating the casework internally, grain flow was cataloged and laid up with continuous horizontal sequencing. Integrated refrigeration and pantry panels were dry-fitted in the shop, verifying reveal clearances down to the millimeter before site delivery.
Material Balance and Craft
The kitchen program pairs rift white oak with marble and porcelain slabs, introducing structural clarity to working surfaces and backsplashes. Honed stone details anchor the island, providing a monolithic counterweight to the warmth of the timber. Thin-line blackened metal accents frame key transitions, grounding the cabinetry bases and framing vertical apertures. This restrained palette operates without applied moldings, relying entirely on flush joints, plumb planes, and material integrity.
Support Spaces and Continuity
A high-functioning kitchen requires separation between open culinary presentation and utility. The main kitchen connects seamlessly into an adjacent scullery and pantry program, shifting intensive staging and dry storage behind secondary architectural planes. The same casework logic, hardware sequencing, and material discipline carry through these secondary spaces, reinforcing the cohesive architectural language that defines the broader residence.
