Reordering the Kitchen in Bedford
October 29, 2026 · 2 min read · Project
A whole-home remodel in Bedford introduces architectural hierarchy, integrated millwork, and balanced natural materials to an open plan.
Bedford Residence kitchen before and after: original white kitchen above, new millwork with stone island and timber ceiling raft below.
Spatial Hierarchy in the Open Plan
The original floor plan was wide and open, but it lacked discipline. Without clear vertical or horizontal markers, the previous kitchen drifted into the living zones rather than anchoring them. Remodeling the space began with establishing proportion: organizing the perimeter storage, defining work sequences, and giving the room a clear center of gravity through a substantial stone island.
The Timber Ceiling Raft
To resolve the overhead volume without dropping perimeter ceiling heights, the kitchen incorporates a suspended timber ceiling raft. Fabricated in wood to counterbalance the stone surfaces below, the raft creates an intentional intermediate datum. It houses recessed architectural lighting while establishing a clean structural plane from which the pendant run drops directly over the island counter. This element gathers service runs, framing, and fixtures into a single aligned system, giving the work zone a defined ceiling boundary within an expansive surrounding room.
In-House Cabinetry and Stone Detailing
The millwork was detailed, built, and installed by iBuild’s in-house carpentry crew and millwork shop. Full-height casework lines the back perimeter, integrating primary refrigeration, pantry access, and concealed utility runs behind uninterrupted panel faces. Natural white oak and walnut set the baseline palette, paired with slab marble and porcelain surfaces that form the island mass and working splashbacks. Blackened metal details provide crisp joint lines and transitions between disparate planes. Precision tolerances at the toe kicks, cabinet returns, and stone edges ensure the cabinetry reads as built-in architecture rather than modular casework.
Continuity Across the Residence
The kitchen remodel anchors a comprehensive interior and envelope reconfiguration. The architectural language developed around warm minimalism and West Coast modern influences extends throughout the house. Similar detailing governs the adjacent scullery, wet bar, and lounge, as well as custom understair casework, library shelving, and dressing suite millwork. By coordinating framing, envelope updates, and finish millwork under a single delivery model, structural adjustments align directly with finished surfaces from the exterior entry through the interior living spaces.
